Clausholm Castle
The Baroque garden at Clausholm Castle

Clausholm Castle is a large Danish country house located some 12 km southeast of Randers in eastern Jutland. It is one of Denmark's finest Baroque buildings.

History[edit]

The castle's origins appear to go back to the 12th century but it is first mentioned in the 14th century when its owner, Lage Ovesen, was one of the leaders of the Jute uprising against Valdemar Atterdag. At the time, Clausholm was a four-winged building surrounded by a moat. But when the first Danish Prime Minister, Grand Chancellor Conrad von Reventlow, acquired the property in the 1690s, it was in such a sorry state that he pulled it down and had today's two-storeyed, three-winged building constructed in its place. It was designed by Danish architect Ernst Brandenburger with the assistance of the Swede Nicodemus Tessin the Younger.[1]

Standing majestically in Jutland's beautiful countryside, just south of Randers and only a half hour drive from Aarhus is Clausholm Castle & Park - one of the most beautiful and complete baroque buildings anywhere in Denmark. The castle grounds are open to visitors throughout the summer, and the castle is open in July and the first week in August.

The castle was designed so that the Grand Chancellor could live on the ground floor while the second floor, with higher and more decorative ceilings, was intended for royal visitors. Both the castle and the park are among Denmark's earliest and finest from the Baroque period.

It was thanks to Reventlow's daughter, Anna Sophie Reventlow, that the castle gained fame when she was abducted by an amorous king, Frederick IV. Anna Sophie became his queen in 1721 but when he died in 1730, she returned to Clausholm with her court.

It is also used for Den Store Bagedyst, a baking competition broadcast on DR1

In the castle's chapel, decorated by Anna Sophie, is one of Denmark's oldest organs built around 1700 by the Botzen brothers from Copenhagen.[2]

Restoration[edit]

As there was no running water or electricity at the castle, for many years it was only inhabited during the summer. But in 1964, the new owners, Henrik and Ruth Berner, modernised the facilities with the result that the castle came back to life.

Restoration work continued for a considerable period, great care being taken to protect the historical building which had remained practically untouched since the 1730s. The efforts were rewarded in 1994 when Queen Margrethe presented the castle with the Europa Nostra Prize for outstanding heritage work.

Park and estate[edit]

The large Baroque park with its fountains and avenues was designed in the 18th century. In 2009, with the support of the Realdania Foundation, the park was thoroughly renovated.[3]

Fairy tales and history go hand in hand with modern society at Clausholm. Clausholm is still operated actively as a manor house and farm, and the family still has its private quarters at the castle. Every May there is a Lifestyle Fair in the park at Clausholm Castle, organized by CHPevent.

Clausholm Castle was built in the 1690s by the Chancellor, Count Conrad Reventlow, and with its 14 stucco ceilings, painted panelling and fine interiors, it soon became renowned as one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Denmark. And it still is.

Clausholm has now been fully restored into a baroque castle and furnished with original furniture from the 1700s. The castle is surrounded by a lush baroque garden with avenues and cascading fountains.

The decoration at Clausholm was the responsibility of a number of famed and highly skilled contemporary artists from all over Europe - among them the Italian artist Carlo Tagliati, who completed the beautifully ornate ceiling in the Garden Room in 1697.

A visit to Clausholm allows you to experience the baroque period at its height. The castle boasts northern Europe's largest number of stucco ceilings, and received the Europa Nostra Award for the restoration of the palace and gardens in 1993.

Clausholm Castle rents out function rooms, that are housed in the original stud main building from 1860. Facilities include banqueting hall for up to 100 diners, a reception room for 80 standing and some seated guests, a terrace overlooking the castle grounds, a bridal suite with four-poster bed, rest rooms and kitchen facilities. It is also possible to book a castle wedding with the ceremony in Clausholm Castle's romantic chapel.

The function rooms are authentically decorated and true to the building's age, but are still comfortable, with good acoustics. The immense banqueting hall astounds visitors with its impressive mix of beautiful old brick walls and a high ceiling. Guests make their entrance in regal fashion, looking down from the open staircase that leads half a level down to the banquet hall. Beautiful old parquet floors are preserved and renovated in the function rooms, stunningly lit by the large, white cross-barred windows.
